“And now, our fan club with the biggest growth,” Clive’s accent rang through the theater’s speakers.

“Lucy,” Roman’s gruff voice whispered as he and Jill’s assistant watched the audience, anticipating who would win the next award. “I know this is unfair of me to ask, but is Jill talking with another agency?”

Lucy kept her eyes trained on the plump woman with teased purple hair galloping down the carpeted aisle. As much as she didn’t like her boss, the situation between Miss Drake and Mr. Long was none of her business. Lucy would miss her weekly conversations with the agent. He was a bright spot on her calendar, understanding, like Mr. Mendoza, how challenging it could be to work with the author. Despite the arguments she had heard behind closed doors between Clive and her boss weeks ago, the contract was executed and would go into effect next month. Lucy thought it was terribly unfair that Mr. Long was unaware of the upcoming changes, especially as he was footing the bill for many of the cruise expenses. She turned to him and whispered, “Isn’t it exciting that there are so many chapters of Miss Drake’s fan club here? It’s a shame they can’t all win.”

“And now, the moment you have all been waiting for,” Jill said into her microphone. She heard whispering from the wings and, from the corner of her eye, saw Lucy say something to Roman. As the tall, stork-like woman returned to her seat, clasping the purple-tinged glass cup to her chest, Jill spoke again into the microphone. “Now, as you all know, the release of Miss Lavender and the Blood-Stained Deck comes out tomorrow, and to celebrate, I have a little present for each of you,” she smiled, “my adoring fans who keep me going.”

“Gee, I don’t exactly remember her being overly thrilled with signing all those books,” Percy muttered, sidling up to Lucy. He had watched the show from the second floor, not noticing the other figures sitting in the shadows. “Do you?”

From where he stood in the stage’s wings, G.G. saw Percy standing beside Lucy and tried to get Clive’s attention.

Lucy gave Percy a tight smile. “Her fans will be thrilled with their gifts. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to make sure Miss Reeves and her team are ready. And Percy, you really shouldn’t be back here.”

As Lucy left the backstage area, members of the audience leaned forward in anticipation as Jill continued talking. “I want to thank each and every one of you. Without your love and support,
